Comics Review: Adventure Time #70

Double double, toil, and trouble.

Overview:

Finn and Jake are on cleanup duty after disposing of Todd, who had extremely foul breath. They’ve been fighting for an entire week straight, and make their way home. They encounter an old man, who was saddened by Todd’s death. He mentions a theme park to them, and they fight some kids hassling the security officer in the front. For saving him, he lets Finn and Jake in early. They find the witch the old man warned them about, and she grants their wish, whatever it is. When they wake up in the morning, they realize that they have doubles. The two of them decide that their doubles will take care of her duties, and they will relax in the theme park in the meantime.

Our Take:

The witch doesn’t seem particularly malicious so far, but her magic is indiscriminate. It selects wishes based on what the person is feeling, which eliminates any sort of verbal affirmation. You don’t know what you’re getting, and she doesn’t tell you what it is. As it turns out, her magic is spot on, in granting Finn and Jake the existence of their doubles, but we have no idea whether they are what they seem.

The old man warns the two of them of the witch, but they decide to ignore it based on impulse. According to Finn, heroes don’t ignore trouble, so they have no reason to fear. Heroes still can be careful, which shows that he has a long way to go.

Finn and Jake want to use their doubles to take a break, but they’re too trusting. They’re friendly for now, yes, but since they’re the product of mysterious magic, we have no idea what they’re really like. They could be acting or go haywire later on, but because they seem nice, they’re believed instantly. Both the issues this time around stem from their naïveté, and it’s bound to hurt them later on.
