English Dub Review: My First Girlfriend Is a Gal “My First Confession”

Ooo… So close My First Girlfriend Is a Gal, you almost had an actual natural boyfriend-girlfriend relationship for a second there.

It’s finally over folks. With what I assume to be an end brought on by the series length being cut short thanks to a Mr. P-E-D-O, My First Girlfriend is a Gal comes to a close on episode 10. Looking over my time with the series it becomes hard for me to really bash on it as it’s truly insipid and depraved moments were offset by some that were actually emotional, endearing and sweet. Wait, what am I saying? Of course, I can bash on this series. The insipid and depraved moments were the rule not the exception in this show.

Unless you forgot about the episode the pedophile worked at a daycare. I will say though that by the end of this episode like the good bits in episode 9, we got another glimpse at the more endearing aspect of what My First Girlfriend is a Gal could have been. Apart from that this finale for the series ends on a lighter note which is definitely a thankful note to leave on. However, I still can’t let the series stand like its accomplished something by having two episodes that were just mildly alright.

OVERVIEW (Spoilers Below)

It’s the finale episode this time as Junichi learns to win Yukana’s heart by first getting the crap beaten out of him and then going on a legit romantic date with Yukana. Will we find out how they truly feel for one another? Partially yes, but partially no too. Junichi definitely has learned to speak openly and honestly, even when he was being a jerk to Yukana he was speaking openly and honestly but I find it annoying that Yukana doesn’t reciprocate that. The very notion that Yukana should partially explain why she likes Junichi is pretty much scoffed at.

I’m on Junichi’s side though, I am so confused as to what about this pathetic nobody pervert initially made Yukana want to go out with him. There is the plausible answer that she liked him at first because she liked to tease him and thus he was more a boy that was perverted but wouldn’t be as quick to move in on her as other guys. But that is just guesswork on my part as I dismantle the show looking for more than I can attach to Yukana to feel like she is a complete person rather than a narrative tool.

But apart from a scene where Pedo goes into a hulk rage, this was a pretty standard finale that showed the glimmers of a decent show again waaaaaaaaay too late. If My First Girlfriend Is a Gal was initially and consistently on this level of writing then it would have been so much more endearing. The gals made that aspect of the show tolerable. The perverted guys made it intolerable. It can really just be boiled down to just that.
