Independent Film Company (IFC) has released the official teaser trailer and teaser poster for Tangles, director Leah Nelson’s animated feature adaptation of Sarah Leavitt’s acclaimed graphic novel.

Following a high-profile festival run—including selections at Cannes, TIFF, AFI Fest, and the Animation Is Film Festival—the film arrives with a 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating and major award season momentum.

Story & Star-Studded Voice Cast

Adapted from Sarah Leavitt’s personal graphic memoir (Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer’s, My Mother, and Me), the film captures an intimate, deeply human exploration of family, memory, and love during a period of transition.

Set in 1990s San Francisco, the narrative follows Sarah (Abbi Jacobson) as she finds love and personal independence. A trip back home reunites her with her vibrant mother, Midge (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), and her close-knit family. When Midge receives an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, Sarah navigates the heartbreak and comedy of enduring family ties as memories begin to fade.

Alongside Jacobson and Louis-Dreyfus, the voice ensemble features:

  • Bryan Cranston

  • Beanie Feldstein

  • Seth Rogen

  • Samira Wiley

  • Sarah Silverman

  • Wanda Sykes

  • Bowen Yang

  • Pamela Adlon

  • Fern Grandin

Creative Team & Production

Directed by Leah Nelson, Tangles was co-written by Nelson, author Sarah Leavitt, and Trev Renney.

The project brings together several prominent independent animation and production banners, including Monarch Media, Point Grey Pictures, Giant Ant Films, and LYLAS Pictures. Festival critics have singled out the film’s illustrative visual style, praising its ability to use adult animation to convey complex emotional and psychological themes.
