English Dub Review: Though I Am an Inept Villainess “Quite the Villainess”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Prince Gyoumei attempts to make amends for his mistakes, and Noble Consort Shu is put on trial for her crimes.
Our Take:
I had a lucky guess that Gabi would go completely nuts because of her jealousy towards Kenshuu. I mean, why else would she try to assassinate the one she once called her friend? It’s the type of twist I saw coming, but it had enough merit to keep me interested, including Grace Lu’s performance as Gabi. Regardless, her plot has been thwarted, and she ends up being banished and stripped of her title, but not before Gabi made amends with Kenshuu. I guess it’s always important to forgive and forget, even though your best friend tried to kill you. Regardless, it’s one of the show’s highlights, especially in how it handles tenderhearted emotion. However, the key point is that the two maidens are back in their original bodies and are willing to switch anytime they want as part of Gyoumei’s atonement.
So, the body-swap scenario clearly only lasted for the first half of the series. Yes, I did say “first half”, as we recently got confirmation that the show will return for the second cours in January. It begs the question: what direction are they going for Reirin and Keigetsu now that they’re friends instead of enemies? My guess is they’ll switch bodies again, but only for their latest situation involving Reirin’s brothers. Of course, Keigetsu is also still the target of several other people who refuse to believe the villainess has really changed. If that’s the case, Reirin may put in a lot more effort to help Keigetsu redeem herself and maybe become a true villainess herself. We won’t know if that’ll be the case until the second half gets released, but until then, I’m satisfied with this conclusion to the show’s first half, which provided enough enjoyable moments to elevate its body-switch premise.
