English Dub Review: The Elusive Samurai “Irreplaceable”
Overview
At the suggestion of Yorishige and Yasuie, Tokiyuki sets out for the capital, Kyo, together with the Elusive Warriors. Major Counselor Kinmune Saionji, an ally of Yasuie, awaits their arrival in Kyo. While Yasuie and Kinmune conduct a secret discussion, Tokiyuki and his companions venture out into the city.
Our Take
Picking up from the previous episode, the latest installment follows Tokiyuki and the Elusive Warriors as they arrive in Kyoto, where Genba gets into trouble after losing a game of sugoroku to the eccentric Mima Sasaki. With his fate hanging in the balance, Shizuku steps up to challenge Mima in an unexpectedly intense battle of wits. The episode also allows the group to explore Kyoto while introducing new characters and complications along the way.
Mima immediately stands out with her flamboyant personality and unconventional appearance, reflecting the concept of “Basara”, a 14th-century Japanese trend associated with extravagance, eccentricity, and defying social conventions. Basara fashion was also known for its colorful, outrageous patterns and extravagant styles, making it easily comparable to punk rock in its time period for its rebellious attitude and willingness to challenge established norms. While Mima adds plenty of energy to the cast, her overly sexualized design feels unnecessary given her age. Meanwhile, Shizuku’s cleverness and increasingly obvious affection for Tokiyuki provide some amusing character moments, although a particularly bizarre scene involving the villains near the end feels rather out of place…
Overall, this was an entertaining episode with a lively new character, enjoyable interactions, and a memorable gambling showdown. The blend of action and humor works well, even if some questionable fanservice occasionally distracts from the story. Mima’s introduction adds an interesting new dynamic to the group, while Kyoto proves to be anything but a quiet stop for Tokiyuki and his companions.
