English Dub Review: Ranma ½ “The Way of Tea”

Overview

A man on a wild horse grabs Ranma. The culprit: Sentaro, heir of the Daimonji School of Martial Arts Tea Ceremony. A Fierece succession battle begins!

Our Take

Picking up from the previous episode, Ranma ½ continues to impress with its smooth animation, energetic direction, and ridiculous humor. Ranma’s involvement in Sentaro’s unusual search for a fiancée leads to plenty of chaotic shenanigans, with the martial arts tea ceremony providing some especially hilarious moments. Meanwhile, Akane’s determination to help Ranma offers another reminder of how much she cares about him, even when neither of them is willing to admit it outright.

The MAPPA remake continues to showcase its impressive production values, particularly through its fluid animation, expressive character acting, and well-executed comedic sequences. Akane’s spectacular umbrella throw was a definite highlight, while the voice acting adds even more personality to the episode. It’s another entertaining blend of action and comedy that breathes new life into the original material.

Overall, this episode’s twist ending offers an amusing yet insightful perspective on Ranma and Akane’s relationship. Contrasting them with a couple who seem more open about their feelings highlights how our two teenage leads remain consistently, and almost obnoxiously, incapable of being honest with each other or with themselves. Between their stubbornness, jealousy, awkward encounters, and the constant complications caused by others throwing themselves at them, their romance becomes a recipe for frustration and over-the-top cartoon violence. Watching them stumble through these ridiculous circumstances is equal parts amusing and exasperating, particularly when a little emotional maturity could help them finally stop getting in their own way.
