Review: Universal Basic Guys “Rhoda”

Mark and Hank’s mom returns to Glantontown. Tammy pursues a new painting hobby.

Our Take

Rhoda is the name of Mark and Hank’s mother who is being introduced kind of like an older “Fonzie” character in the third season of Universal Basic Guys not unlike Jerry Stiller on King of Queens or Doris Roberts on Everybody Loves Raymond where she’s going to get in the mix of some upcoming episodes like this here season three premiere. Moreover, expect to see a litany of big-named guest stars just as the great Thomas Lennon who guest stars as a wine and paint shop manager named Antoine Shmegmin that convinces Tammy to pursue a painting hobby. Unfortunately, the Reno 911 actor doesn’t get a WHOLE lot of screen time, but the contributions were very much noted and funny.

Fred Armisen excels in the season three debut though that’s to be expected as he is one of the more elite voice actors in the business today. His drunken antics, passionate pleas about painting, and his buoyancy opposite Mark is one of the better elements of the show and here’s hoping we get to see more of it front-and-center for the duration of the next 15 episodes. Our fabled Malamut brothers continue to build out it’s Springfield with the kickoff of Universal Basic Guys season three and with a number of impressive guest stars on the way this could be another banner season for the franchise that is by far the funniest of the FOX originals.
