Independent Video Game Astro Burn Expands to Social Media with AI-Assisted Micro-Series

Independent game studio Beyond the Pixels is taking its bullet-hell “cute-’em-up” video game Astro Burn beyond PC and consoles into short-form animation. Showrunner and game creator HaZ Dulull has teamed up with Montreal and Los Angeles-based animation startup Nura Studios to adapt the title into a 10-episode vertical micro-series tailored for TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels.

The project relies on Nura’s proprietary Showcraft animation pipeline, allowing a tiny team to produce one-minute episodes in roughly one week per episode.

Protecting the IP with Custom Models

Generative AI tools often draw skepticism from creators over style consistency and IP infringement. To bypass these concerns, Dulull—a director and visual effects veteran—utilized a custom-trained version of the Showcraft platform locked down specifically to his own pre-existing game assets.

What Is Astro Burn?

Inspired by ’90s classic arcade shoot-’em-ups like Parodius and Pop’n TwinBee, Astro Burn follows Astro, a space-faring cat piloting her way back home alongside her robot companion, AL. The micro-series expands on the comedic, catnip-fueled narrative of the game, pitting Astro against absurd cosmic threats ranging from giant mecha pandas to opera-singing space squids.

A New Model for Indie Game Marketing

Adapting video games into linear animation traditionally requires massive budgets and months of production time—luxuries rarely available to independent developers. By combining custom-trained machine learning tools with short-form social video formats, Nura Studios and Beyond the Pixels aim to establish a blueprint for indie studios seeking to build brand awareness where potential players are actively scrolling.

New episodes of the Astro Burn micro-series are currently rolling out across TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram.
