Hell Freezes Over: Netflix Officially Developing Animated Diablo Series

After years of industry rumors, scrapped pre-production plans, and corporate legal friction, Sanctuary is finally coming to the screen. Blizzard Entertainment president Johanna Faries announced during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 that an animated Diablo series is officially in development with Netflix.

“As a big Diablo player myself, and as someone who loves the indulgent darkness of Sanctuary, I am very excited to see this project come to life,” Faries shared on stage. “And Diablo, I promise, is just the beginning.”

A Long Time Coming

An animated adaptation of the dark-fantasy hack-and-slash franchise has been hovering around Hollywood for almost a decade.

  • 2018–2020: Early reports surfaced that an anime-style Diablo series was in active pre-production at Netflix under former Activision Blizzard Studios co-president Nick van Dyk.

  • The Delay: The original effort stalled after high-profile corporate litigation between Activision Blizzard and Netflix over executive poaching threw a wrench into the working relationship between the two studios.

  • The Revival: Now fully integrated under Microsoft following its historic $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the hatchet has been buried, clearing the path to bring Sanctuary’s lore back to development.

Netflix’s Expanding Video Game Empire

The partnership makes perfect sense for both sides. Netflix has established itself as the premier home for high-end video game adaptations, finding massive success with animated projects like Castlevania, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Arcane.

Given Diablo’s signature grimdark tone, gothic horror aesthetic, and ultra-violent lore, a serialized animated series offers the ideal format to explore the endless war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells.

While no animation studio, showrunner, or release window has been officially locked in, Faries teased that Blizzard is actively exploring further multimedia projects across its flagship IPs, hinting at future potential screen adaptations for Overwatch and Warcraft.
