Our Take

Picking up from the previous episode, Chiyome finally confronts her long-lost brother Sasuke, only to find him in a very different state than expected. After their brief encounter, Arc heals Chiyome while Sasuke escapes with his summoned skeletons. Arc soon connects Sasuke to the mysterious magical artifacts from earlier episodes, while Chiyome steels herself for the possibility that she may have to face her brother again. Meanwhile, Arc figures out where Sasuke is headed next and sets off with the Tiger Clan.

The undead battles themselves were fairly underwhelming, with Sasuke being the only real threat, but the mystery surrounding him makes things more interesting. Tsubone also gets to shine with her rather unconventional method of extracting information, while Arc adopting Shiden as a pet provides some welcome comedy. Chiyome’s confrontation with Sasuke carries some emotional weight as well, particularly when he briefly reacts to his former name.

Overall, this episode feels more like setup for a larger storyline than a major payoff, leaving plenty of questions surrounding Sasuke and the forces behind him. The Hilk Church adds an interesting new threat, although the anime’s constant portrayal of humans as hostile toward other races is starting to feel a little heavy-handed. With only two episodes left, there isn’t much time to wrap everything up, so hopefully all this setup leads to a satisfying conclusion.
