English Dub Review: Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc. “Are You Expecting Us to Sugarcoat This?”
Overview
The Kaii at Tonomori is revealed to be someone’s act of sabotage, promoting a scheme to ease magic regulations behind the scenes and manipulate public opinion. Then, the culprit emerges-someone entirely unexpected. While Yamimori becomes comfortable at Magilumiere, Kana decides to confront major industry norms and her own role in the process, sparking the onset of war on a much grander scale.
Our Take
Picking up from the previous episode, Magilumiere continues setting the stage for something much bigger. Shigemoto sheds more light on Sho Manao and his connection to the events surrounding magic regulation, while Koga, Kamakura, and others begin making moves of their own. With several characters operating behind the scenes, the tension is steadily building toward what’s to come.
The rest of the proceedings lean more toward political thriller territory, with magic regulation becoming an increasingly important theme this season. Since magical girls deal with dangerous Kaii, how their powers and work are regulated can have major consequences for both them and the public. The season continues exploring this conflict while introducing new characters into the fray. Kana’s uncertainty is balanced by Akane and Iroha’s support, while Lily Aoi, a supporting character from Season One, makes a welcome return. I also like how the episode balances its serious moments with some fun comedic ones.
Overall, this feels like a setup episode designed to get the pieces in place for the endgame. There are plenty of intriguing questions surrounding Sho, Koga, Shigemoto, and the future of Magilumiere, even if some of the political aspects require a little suspension of disbelief. With only three episodes left after this, I’m hoping the series can bring everything together without rushing what has clearly been building in the background.
