English Dub Review: Hana-Kimi “What Do You Want?”

Overview:

The joint Christmas ball with St. Blossom is coming up, but Mizuki ends up having to learn the girl steps?

Our Take(Spoilers):

Remember how there was a VA that I couldn’t quite place and was trying to figure out who it was? Well, luckily I also reviewed Mushoku Tensei and remembered that this VA voiced a character there. In case you were wondering, the VA in question is Katie Otten, and I was really glad I figured that one out. It didn’t have any bearing on this episode or anything, but it was going to bug me, and just in case there was anyone else out there who was dying to know, I would let the info out.

One of the things I was thinking about while watching this episode is a lot of the missed opportunities. With Mizuki pretending to be a guy, they could really use that to explore how guys think or something. Seeing Mizuki comment on what a lot of the guys say when it pertains to women would be interesting. While not the most novel of ideas, I thought it would give more insight into how she views things as well, but instead she’s only focused on Sano. So long as he isn’t a jerk about women, then she couldn’t care less.

There is going to be a Christmas ball between the all-boys school and the all-girls school. Of course, there aren’t enough girls for the ball, so the school offers to pay some of the more feminine boys to dress up like girls. Outside of very specific drag events, I can’t think of many times when schools do things like that. I know for an anime we’re supposed to suspend our disbelief, but sometimes it gets a little rough. I do hope this leads to Sano and Mizuki dancing together for the ball, especially since it will be around the time of his birthday.

One thing that’s fascinating about the Mizuki and Sano situation is that they both have feelings for each other. The annoying part is that I feel like Sano now knows that Mizuki likes him but won’t say anything. If I knew my roommate was not only a cute girl but a cute girl who was into me, I would have a hard time not saying anything in that case. I’ll be hesitantly intrigued to see how the ball goes for everyone involved.
