Trey Parker and Matt Stone Inducted into Television Academy Hall of Fame as ‘South Park’ Prepares for Season 29

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the visionary duo behind South Park and the smash Broadway musical The Book of Mormon, have been officially inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame.

The induction was presented by actor and comedian Bill Hader, a longtime friend and former writer-producer on South Park. Hader offered a warm, humorous tribute, sharing personal anecdotes from his years spent inside the show’s legendary writers’ room alongside Parker and Stone.

A Milestone Year of Accolades

The Hall of Fame honor comes amidst a banner year for the creators and their flagship series. South Park earned three Primetime Emmy Award nominations this year, tying its franchise record for the most nominations in a single year:

  • Outstanding Animated Program: Nominated for the episode “Sermon on the ‘Mount”.

  • Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance: Trey Parker for his performance as Satan in “The Crap Out”.

  • Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics: Trey Parker for the original song “Christian Woman” featured in “The Crap Out”.

These nominations add to South Park’s extraordinary award track record, which includes five Primetime Emmy wins, 20 total nominations, a Peabody Award, and recognition as the first-ever animated honoree at the Television Academy Honors. It was also the first animated show nominated by the Producers Guild of America (PGA) in the Best Episodic Comedy category.

Cultural Impact & Legacy

Beyond television, Parker and Stone achieved theatrical history alongside co-composer Robert Lopez with The Book of Mormon. Premiering on Broadway in 2011, the musical is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Currently the tenth longest-running show in Broadway history, it won nine Tony Awards—including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical—as well as a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

As the franchise approaches its 30th anniversary in 2027, South Park shows no signs of slowing down. Coming off a dominant 2025 run—which delivered its highest average Adult 18–49 audience share in 27 years—the series is set to premiere its 29th season on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, on Comedy Central, with episodes streaming next-day on Paramount+.
