Picking up from the previous episode, 100 Girlfriends finally dives headfirst into an obligatory idol-themed episode, and somehow manages to make the concept feel perfectly at home within the series’ usual brand of chaotic, absurdist humor. The training segments are packed with hilarious moments, while also giving practically every member of the Rentaro Family a chance to shine. What makes the episode work, however, is that beneath all the absurdity, it stays true to what makes this group so lovable: nobody is treated as expendable, and Rentaro will go to ridiculous lengths to make sure everyone feels included. The comedy lands consistently, from the increasingly ridiculous training struggles to the sheer insanity surrounding the performance, and even the supporting characters get some memorable moments.
The real highlight is easily the production quality. Bibury Animation Studios clearly went all-out, delivering two full-length songs with surprisingly impressive choreography, fluid character animation, detailed crowd shots, and even animated reflections and smartphone screens during the performances. It genuinely feels like the staff approached this as though they were animating an actual idol anime rather than simply checking off an obligatory song-and-dance sequence. The performances themselves are energetic and visually impressive, while the soundtrack adds another layer of charm, with “Ark” standing out as a particularly enjoyable song. Even the episode’s more heartfelt moments work because they never sacrifice the wacky fun ridiculousness that this show is known to have.
Overall, this was easily one of the strongest episodes of the season so far. The idol premise may not be the funniest concept the series has tackled, but the combination of lovable character interactions, absurd comedy, surprisingly strong emotional beats, and phenomenal animation makes it incredibly entertaining. Rentaro’s dedication to his girlfriends remains as ridiculous and endearing as ever, and the episode does a great job reminding us that the series’ greatest strength is not simply how over-the-top it can be, but how much genuine affection exists between its characters. And, naturally, the episode saves one last absurd punchline for the end because apparently even an idol episode can’t resist going completely off the rails.
