English Dub Review: Daemons of the Shadow Realm “Kagemori and Shingo”
Overview
Yuru and Dera head to the warehouses at night to meet Ivan.
Our Take
Picking up from the previous episode, this one does a good job juggling several storylines without feeling overcrowded. The Left and Right vs. Ivan fight was easily the highlight, with Ivan proving surprisingly capable against the two legendary Daemons. In many ways, Ivan reminds me of Hol Horse from “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure”, given his laid-back mercenary mentality and the way his Daemon abilities center on sentient weapons. It gives him a unique fighting style and makes the battle especially entertaining, even if I still feel Left and Right haven’t quite lived up to their reputation yet. Yuru also rejects Shingo and Asuma’s offer, while Tadera continues questioning where his loyalties lie. Meanwhile, Gonzo proves why he’s the head of the Kagemori clan, which was both intimidating and hilarious.
The rest of the proceedings also continue building tension within the Kagemori clan, with Asa once again finding herself in danger despite simply wanting to see Yuru. Akio’s sudden appearance at the end makes for an excellent cliffhanger, especially with how suspicious the situation looks. I also loved the contrast between the serious developments and the comedy, particularly the poor security guard having to watch Gonzo casually wreak havoc outside. The Daemon designs continue to look great, and the action has felt noticeably stronger over these last few episodes. My only real complaint is still Left and Right, as I’m hoping they eventually get a chance to show why they’re supposed to be so powerful.
Overall, this was another solid episode that continues pushing the story in an interesting direction without overwhelming the viewer. The action, mystery, comedy, and character moments all complement each other nicely, while Ivan’s unusual abilities and Gonzo’s ridiculous display of power provide some memorable highlights. The final cliffhanger leaves just enough mystery to make me eager for the next episode, and at this point, the series definitely feels like it’s gaining momentum.
