English Dub Review: Sparks of Tomorrow “Time to Part”

Our Take

Picking up from the previous episode, Sparks of Tomorrow delivers what is easily one of the strongest episodes of the series so far. It does a fantastic job developing the relationships between its central characters, particularly Kihachi and Inako, whose willingness to put each other’s dreams before their own leads to some genuinely heartfelt moments. There’s also a nice balance between the heavier drama and the series’ trademark humor, with the episode finding plenty of room for some wonderfully ridiculous comedy without undermining its more emotional scenes. Most importantly, Kihachi continues to grow more confident in himself and what he wants for the future, making his development increasingly satisfying to watch.

The rest of the proceedings also give Yosuke some much-needed depth, providing greater insight into the person behind his increasingly erratic behavior. His emotional turmoil is portrayed with surprising intensity, making him a much more sympathetic and complicated character without necessarily excusing his actions. The episode also does a great job using character expressions, body language, and performances to communicate emotions that aren’t always spoken aloud. Kyoto Animation continues to shine here, with the animation, music, and voice acting working together particularly well during the episode’s more dramatic moments. Even the smaller character interactions feel carefully handled, giving the episode an emotional weight that some of the earlier installments were missing.

Overall, this was a pretty good character-focused episode that the series greatly needed. It develops its central relationship dynamics, adds considerably more depth to one of its more complicated characters, and continues pushing the story toward its larger themes of dreams, grief, and moving forward. While some of the characters can still be frustrating in how they handle their problems, the emotional payoff is strong enough to make those flaws easier to overlook. With the series now entering its final stretch, this episode leaves things in a particularly promising place, and I’m genuinely excited to see where everything goes from here.
