English Dub Review: Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc. “You’re Not Fit for This Job”
Overview
In Kyoto, Magilumiere meets the engineering candidate Yamimori, who boasts impressive skills but struggles to cooperate. While compatibility with the team is called into question, he appears to be hiding certain feelings about his childhood friend Sakae and his personal values. Meanwhile, during a festival at Tonomori Shrine, a ritual unleashes a tamed Kaii while an ominous shadow lurks behind the scenes…
Our Take
Picking up from the previous episode, Magilumiere meets their prospective new engineer a day early: Hibiki Yamimori, Tonomori Shrine’s personal engineer and Sakae’s childhood friend. While his technical skills are clearly impressive, his abrasive attitude and poor communication immediately clash with Akane’s professional standards. Still, there’s more to Hibiki than his rough exterior, and his connection to Sakae adds an interesting layer to their relationship. The episode also expands on Sakae’s unique role as a traditional shrine maiden magical girl, particularly through her partnership with Igni, a powerful Kaii that can be controlled rather than simply exterminated. It raises some intriguing questions about the nature of Kaii and whether coexistence could someday be possible.
The real highlight, however, is easily Sakae’s transformation sequence. Blending the traditional appearance of a miko with the aesthetics of a modern magical girl, her transformation is stylish, striking, and unlike anything we’ve seen from the other characters. The way she transforms alongside Igni, even taking on the appearance of an ancient shrine maiden, makes the whole sequence feel especially distinctive. I also enjoyed the episode’s quieter character moments, particularly the contrast between Hibiki’s obvious technical ability and his complete inability to communicate normally with other people. Akane may have been a little too quick to judge him, but her determination to straighten him out provides some amusing friction. Meanwhile, the episode quietly begins setting up something much more ominous, with a mysterious figure appearing toward the end…
Overall, this was another solid episode that continues to demonstrate why Magilumiere stands out despite not being a conventional magical-girl series. Its workplace setting, coding-based magic system, adult cast, and focus on the day-to-day problems of running a magical-girl company give it a different identity, while its occasional transformation sequences still show plenty of appreciation for the genre’s roots. Sakae’s transformation is easily the standout here, and Hibiki is already shaping up to be an entertaining addition to the cast. The episode closes on a particularly ominous note, making it clear that something bigger is brewing beneath the surface. If nothing else, next week looks like it could finally put all these new pieces into motion.
