Two decades after the world’s most dangerous death metal band first decimated television screens, Dethklok is returning to its roots. Metalocalypse is gearing up for a major milestone celebration at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, marking the 20th anniversary of the legendary Adult Swim animated series.
The anniversary event, titled “Metalocalypse: 20 Years of Dethklok,” will take place on Friday, July 24, from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM PDT in Room 5AB. Series creator, writer, voice artist, and musician Brendon Small will lead a panel reflecting on the show’s massive legacy, its enduring cultural impact on the heavy metal community, and the making of their latest feature film, Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar.
From a 14-Year-Old’s Dream to a Global Phenomenon
When Brendon Small first leaked the very first trailer for Metalocalypse onto a nascent YouTube platform in the summer of 2006, he never expected it to achieve mainstream success. In recent interviews, Small admitted the project was originally written for a highly specific audience: “Me when I was 14, discovering heavy metal and discovering guitar.”
Instead, the misadventures of the fictional, egocentric quintet—vocalist Nathan Explosion, guitarists Skwisgaar Skwigelf and Toki Wartooth, bassist William Murderface, and drummer Pickles—became a massive hit. Over four seasons, a rock opera special (The Doomstar Requiem), and multiple albums, the show masterfully balanced comically outrageous gore with actual, fiercely respected death metal tracks.
Songs like “Murmaider” and “Thunderhorse” went from tongue-in-cheek parodies to legitimate metal anthems. Small performed the blistering guitar work and deep, guttural vocals for the records himself, collaborating with legendary “Atomic Clock” drummer Gene Hoglan to ground the music in real-world extremity.
A Legacy Kept Alive on Stage
The San Diego Comic-Con panel serves as a perfect victory lap for a franchise that has consistently defied the odds. Despite navigating complex network politics over the years—including a recent corporate shuffle that saw the series temporarily pulled from Adult Swim’s streaming library—Metalocalypse has remained vibrant and vital, largely due to its passionate fanbase and intense live presence.
Dethklok spent the first half of 2026 touring alongside Viking-metal icons Amon Amarth and rising fantasy-metal troupe Castle Rat on the massive “Amonklok Conquest Tour.” These live shows function as a highly coordinated multimedia experience, blending a crushing live “pit orchestra” with giant projection screens displaying the animated band.
For Small, keeping himself in the shadows during these live sets is entirely by design. “I want to hypnotize you,” Small explained to Knotfest. “We sound exactly like Dethklok, but we don’t look like them. You shouldn’t be considering me; you should be considering the sounds you hear.”
