English Dub Review: You and I Are Polar Opposites “Christmas Eve”

Our Take:

The last year or so has seen us getting a lot of romance anime. They haven’t all been great, but other than Rent-a-Girlfriend, I haven’t hated any of them so far either. One thing that has been fantastic with these romance shows is the speed at which the romance happens. Tani and Suzuki were a couple after the first episode. Having said that, some things happen much more slowly than I would like.

Tani and Suzuki have yet to have their first kiss. After this episode, I would argue they still haven’t had their first kiss, but they sure did try. They decided to bake a cake together for Christmas, and Suzuki’s family would be gone so that they would have the house to themselves. Their first “kiss” happened when they both caught something that fell, and when they turned to look at each other, their lips touched. I don’t count that one; the second one, they were actually trying to kiss, and a loud noise startled them, and their teeth touched instead. So, in my eyes, they’ve yet to actually kiss.

This episode already has me excited for the second season because even though the main couple hasn’t kissed yet, they’re at least trying. Not only that, but if you’ve read my reviews last season, then you know I am invested in Azuma and Taira as a potential couple. Azuma got a lot of focus early in this episode, and there were some things I was a bit confused about.

For some reason, Azuma attempted to talk to people from other classes, and both times they gave her the cold shoulder. I don’t recall her having issues talking to people before, but maybe I missed something. As far as her and Taira getting along, there was a hiccup there as well. The kids split up and probably won’t see each other during Christmas break, but Taira tried to get away from Azuma because I don’t think he realizes that she actually likes him. Whether that is romantic or not remains to be seen, but she does like him.

This show puts such a huge smile on my face that I’m excited it’s back. If you’re ever feeling down, watch some of this show, and I don’t think you’ll be feeling quite as sad as you were before.
