English Dub Review: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime “New Companions”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
With everyone settled back in at Tempest, Rimuru works on a favor for Veldora: providing a body for Ifrit, another powerful being whom Rimuru absorbed back in the first season.
OUR TAKE
Time for the second half of this section of the season, which means a new arc and, since it’s the beginning of another dozen of episodes, new Opening and Ending animations! The new OP is kind of a pulsing trippy club beat to contrast the previous one being a thumping rock tune, so I’m looking forward to hearing more of that, while the ED is a pretty charming stop motion short film about Shizu, another reincarnated human whom Rimuru met early on in the first season. She was also the vessel of the spirit Ifrit, whom Rimuru was able to defeat and absorb, and then absorb Shizu as part of her dying wish, gaining her form and his most iconic look. Shizu also appears quite a bit in the OP, so aside from this episode mainly focusing on rehabilitating the spirit that basically killed her, Shizu’s presence will likely be present for the remainder of this arc. As for that spirit, apparently Veldora (who was also absorbed Rimuru for an extended period, if you’ll recall) became friends with him and is pushing for his release now that Rimuru has better designed a vessel for spirits like him to inhabit. And so, that’s what they do, taking the vestiges of Ifrit’s spirit and bringing them into this artificial body…that comes out looking like a woman with massive titties, because why the hell not at this point.
We’re three and a half seasons deep into this show, if I made a point of talking about every single time it did fanservice for its own sake, I would never have time to talk about the story or the characters. At some point, you gotta just sigh and move on. Anyway, Ifrit becomes a subordinate under Veldora, gaining the new name Charys, and with that new name, the ability to go between male and female forms, where the male form is better at fire moves and the female form is better at wind moves. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the whole reason this came about is because Rimuru permitted Veldora, Ramirus, and Diablo to get their own personal assistants, and this was Veldora’s pick. We see Diablo out searching for his in a familiar location for anyone who saw the post-credits scene of the second Slime movie, and the characters shown in that scene are also present in the new OP, so we should be seeing them soon as well. And Granbell Rosso is also still out there, so we’ll have to deal with him at some point. But hey, as long as we get the ball rolling on the new plot and don’t dick around in the dungeon for too long like last time (or get into too many board meetings), I got no complaints.
