English Dub Review: Chainsmoker Cat “I’m More of a Straight Man Than a Funny Man”

Overview:

After another clash with her landlord, Yani agrees to tend his garden to cover her rent. It seems like a perfect mix-until she faces his cabbage patch.

Our Take:

I don’t mean to constantly talk about how gross this show is, but man, this week was tough. I made the mistake of trying to eat while watching this show, and I had to switch over to a different review. Up until this point, I was under the impression that while Yani was messy, she wasn’t malicious. In every episode thus far, she has dropped something on the landlord’s head while he’s cleaning below her balcony. It was rude to be sure, but it never seemed to be on purpose. Well, that changed in this episode when she kept dropping stuff on him and spitting on his head. The way he described the spit is what grossed me out to the point that I needed to watch something else for a bit.

The landlord then comes over to Yani’s house because he wants to try to get her over her nicotine addiction. While there, he ends up with two nicotine patches on his head, and Yani tries to think of a way to get them off. You probably won’t believe me when I tell you the plan she settles on. She pulls down her pants, puts her butt in his face, and then farts directly in his face. The smell is so bad it knocks him out, and she takes the patches off.

We got introduced to some other new characters today. We met Kaoruko, who has a Kansai accent and visits Yani; more on her in a bit. Then Yani went to visit Aruko, who seems to have a similar problem to Yani, but her vice of choice is alcohol. She must also be friends with Kaoruko because she comes to visit for a nightcap after a drinking party only to find that Aruko threw up all over Yani while they slept.

Kaoruko has one of those jobs where they drive around town in a van and speak through a speaker, making announcements. For whatever reason, she decides that she wants Yani to fart into the microphone and everyone outside can hear their entire conversation.

Look… I’ve seen worse shows than this, but I’m trying to figure out who this show is for. It has a few ecchi moments here and there, but I wouldn’t call this an ecchi show. Maybe it’s supposed to be an anti-smoking show. I’d like to see some sort of plot, but maybe this is a slice of life show; it just happens to be a gross life.
