‘Rick and Morty’ Spin-Off? Adult Swim Announces ‘President Curtis’ Animated Series for July
Adult Swim has officially confirmed a brand-new animated spin-off series centers on one of Rick and Morty’s most memorable recurring characters. The network dropped a surprise teaser trailer announcing President Curtis, a new standalone series scheduled to premiere this July.
The character of the President—voiced with unwavering, bombastic authority by veteran actor Keith David—has been an elite fixture of the Rick and Morty universe since his debut in the Season 2 episode “Get Schwifty.” Over the years, President Curtis has evolved from a desperate global leader seeking Rick’s sci-fi help into a petty, hyper-militarized rival who routinely clashes with the duo over everything from national security to Thanksgiving turkeys.
Breaking News: The President Killed Paul Bunyan
The meta teaser trailer plays directly into the show’s established roots, opening on Rick and Morty sitting on their living room couch surfing through interdimensional cable networks. When Morty notices the President on screen, he frantically yells at Rick to change the channel back.
The broadcast cuts to a live White House press conference where President Curtis drops a massive bombshell: “As many of you know, I killed Paul Bunyan today.”
Watching from the couch, Rick and Morty try to piece together the premise of the new show. Rick guesses that Curtis is embarking on an X-Files-style journey of monster hunting, while Morty chiming in that it looks like an animated version of National Treasure. Back at the podium, the President delivers a trademark, unhinged threat directed at the legendary folklore giant: “I’ll say this much to anyone who thinks they’re taller than the law: timber, bitch.”
“Not for me,” Morty quips on the couch, while a clearly entertained Rick fires back, “I’m sold.”
Keith David Takes Center Stage
While Adult Swim has yet to release a full logline detailing the exact plot structure, the teaser heavily implies that the series will follow the absurd secret missions, monster encounters, and global operations overseen by the United States’ most aggressive fictional commander-in-chief.
The series gives Keith David a well-deserved starring vehicle. The legendary character actor’s deep, booming baritone has lent a brilliant layer of gravitas to the character’s petty, narcissistic nature, making him a perennial fan favorite whenever he pops up in the mainline series.
The choice to spin off President Curtis is a logical expansion for the franchise. It follows Adult Swim’s previous efforts to widen the universe, such as Rick and Morty: The Anime, which explored different creative dimensions of the IP.
President Curtis is set to touch down on Adult Swim this July. Check out the official teaser trailer below:
