Comic Review: Rick and Morty – THE END #5
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
To escape his trial, Rick has transferred his brain to one of the jury, so they all must try to figure out who among them has been possessed by the Sanchez.
OUR TAKE
We’re in the final countdown for the Rick and Morty comics, with only three left, including this one! Yes, as hinted at, there is a secret seventh issue, Rick and Morty Forever #0, that will conclude everything, and release later this month! But for now, we talk about Rick’s last attempt to escape consequences. After every mistake that has drawn in anyone who has ever tried to help him, Rick still thinks that he can get away clean by hiding away in one of the jurors. And while he’s not (seemingly) present for much of this issue, at least until the reveal that he was, we get to see those who are present, with their lives on the line, trying to clean up his mess once again. It’s basically a microcosm of what Rick does to the people around him, especially those who at one point cared about him, all in one room. And for a typically chaotic and cosmic story like Rick and Morty, having a bottle episode all about the core problem in the main duo’s dynamic is pretty fitting. The show does sometimes take the time to have a story be about the darker and sadder implications of Rick’s existence and how that impacts others, so it feels natural that the comic meant to bring an end to that run would do so as well, though it’s a bit rarer for this medium’s version of the two.
And as we learn, Rick did not do this because he had some big plan to manipulate everyone to give him an opening to escape. He actually had no plan at all, and if the judge was serious about killing everyone if they couldn’t smoke him out, he was basically just killing himself along with twelve other people. But when Morty is able to figure out who he’s possessing, he tries to just end himself, which Morty obviously can’t let him do…at least not alone. Yep, by the end of this issue, Rick and Morty are dead “for real”, which is gonna make these next two issues pretty short I’m guessing! Or we can find out what the hell any of this means when we cover the end of The End with issue #6, pretty soon! It’s weird to think we’re this close to the end, but at least we have a handful of seasons of the cartoon left, I guess?
