English Dub Review: Jujutsu Kaisen “Sendai Colony”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Hundreds of miles away from the Tokyo Colony, Yuta faces three reincarnated sorcerers of astounding ability while attempting to protect endangered civilians.

OUR TAKE

As mentioned, a lot of people, including myself, thought this would only be PART of the third season, seeing as this was blatantly referred to as only the first part of the Culling Game arc. Alas, it seems this arc will be going over at least two seasons, meaning we have the shortest season of JJK thus far. It also doesn’t help that this episode doesn’t really feel like a finale…mainly because it isn’t really meant to be one. It’s also not the first time that a season of this show didn’t really feel like a finale since the first season also had that quality with its last few episodes. It does have a bit of a book end quality to it considering that Yuta was reintroduced at the start of this season and now gets to have the spotlight for its end, but that’s about it. Plus, remember that Yuta was technically the original protagonist of this story, with the prototype manga that would eventually become JJK as we know it started with him. But the formatting blunders are not going to be within the top twenty things people talk about in regards to this episode, as it is pretty much a fireworks display showing off Yuta’s extraordinary abilities against three dynamic opponents: Takako Uro, who can bend the sky around her, Ryu Ishigori, who can shoot an intense laser of cursed energy from his pompadour, and Kurourushi, a literal giant cockroach man. There was a fourth guy, but Yuta killed him at the end of last episode, so we’re not counting him here.

We get to see some absolutely dazzling displays of Cursed Techniques in this tight nearly half hour episode (slightly extended over the usual runtime). Yuta of course has his copy technique and use of Rika to keep his moveset more varied, though while Ishigori only has his giant hair dick to keep shooting his shots out, he also manages to keep that entertaining with his sheer eagerness for a satisfying battle. Uro apparently holds a beef with Yuta’s supposed ancestors, which makes up the majority of her dialogue after a point, but her pretty versatile technique helps even that out and keep it from feeling repetitive. And then there’s Kurourushi who is a whole can of bugs to himself, almost literally. From these fights, we get what is apparently the only multi Domain Expansion in the series, but unfortunately we don’t get to see much of it before it’s interrupted. We do get to see a cool as hell beam struggle between Ishigori and Yuta, using the season’s opening song as the background music, and it’s an awesome way to close out the battle. Yeah, not a ton of story to really dig into here, pretty much just admiring the action, but it at least let’s us go out on a high as we now wait for the second part of the Culling Game to begin.
