AEW and Adult Swim Team Up for New Animated Series ‘Tales from the Top Rope’

The worlds of professional wrestling and alternative animation are officially colliding. In a major expansion of the partnership between All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), a new animated web series titled Tales from the Top Rope has been greenlit for Adult Swim’s digital platforms.

The series marks a significant step for AEW as it looks to leverage the “cool factor” of the Adult Swim brand to reach a demographic that skews toward younger, comedy-focused viewers.

The Lore of the Ring

Tales from the Top Rope is described as an anthology-style series that will explore the “heightened, absurd, and occasionally mythological” backstories of AEW’s most colorful personalities. Unlike a standard sports documentary, the show will lean into the creative freedom of animation to turn wrestling urban legends and character origins into stylized short films.

Early reports suggest the first season will feature episodes centered on:

  • Darby Allin’s daredevil roots and “skeletal” philosophy.

  • The mysterious, interdimensional origins of Orange Cassidy’s nonchalance.

  • A retro-inspired deep dive into the flamboyant lifestyle of The Young Bucks.

A Synergy of Brands

The collaboration is a natural evolution for WBD. AEW’s flagship show, Dynamite, has long been a ratings powerhouse for TBS and TNT, while Adult Swim remains a leader in the digital and late-night space.

“Wrestling is essentially a live-action comic book,” said an Adult Swim spokesperson. “Partnering with AEW to bring these characters into our specific style of animation allows us to play with the ‘kayfabe’ in a way that’s never been done before.”

Production and Visual Style

While the specific animation house has not yet been named, the series is expected to utilize a “multimedia approach,” with different episodes potentially featuring different art styles to match the tone of the wrestler being highlighted. This echoes the successful format of anthology series like Love, Death & Robots, albeit with a more comedic and action-oriented “indie” wrestling edge.

AEW CEO Tony Khan expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting that it provides a new way for fans to engage with their favorite stars outside of the ring. “We’ve always said that AEW is a place where creativity thrives. Tales from the Top Rope is the perfect vehicle to showcase the depth of our roster’s imagination.”

Release and Distribution

Tales from the Top Rope is slated to premiere on Adult Swim’s YouTube channel and Instagram later this year, with episodes eventually being bundled for streaming on Max.

By keeping the series primarily on digital platforms first, WBD is targeting the “viral” potential of animated shorts, a strategy that has previously worked wonders for Adult Swim hits like Smiling Friends and The Amazing Digital Circus. For AEW fans, it’s a chance to see their favorite wrestlers in a literal new dimension.
