2026 IMDB Report: Rick and Morty Outranks The Simpsons, South Park and Futurama
Earlier this year, Rick and Morty went into its ninth season, releasing weekly from May 24 to July 26, 2026.
While we’re only 4 episodes in, the animated sitcom has received positive reviews from viewers, rating it 8.3/10 on average so far on IMDB.
With this in mind, the team at Hard Rock Bet ranked the best animated comedy series based on both all-time ratings and 9th-season ratings. Spoiler: Rick and Morty top both those rankings!
* Only 4 episodes have aired so far (out of 10) at the time of this writing.
Rick and Morty takes the top spot with an average IMDB rating of 9.0/10 across its 94 episodes, followed by BoJack Horseman (8.8/10) and South Park (8.7).
Surprisingly, The Simpsons only rank 5th with an all-time rating of 8.6/10. However, the series has released 858 episodes since 1989, far more than any other series in the ranking, giving it a much larger body of episodes contributing to its overall score.
So, do fans prefer quality over quantity? Not necessarily. Sitcoms like Inside Job (18 episodes) or The Cleveland Show (88 episodes) all rank fairly low compared to behemoths like South Park, Adventure Time, or even Family Guy.
When focusing on their 9th season only, as it stands, with an average rating of 8.3/10, Rick and Morty is tied for first place with South Park and Adventure Time.
Other notable animated sitcoms that are still ongoing have seen slightly lower ratings, as shown by Family Guy, King of the Hill and American Dad! (7.3).
How does Rick and Morty compare to other popular shows?
The study did not stop there. Many shows have been adored by fans for years, before producing one last disappointing last season or finale.
Using Rotten Tomatoes’ list of the best TV shows of the last 25 years as a benchmark, Hard Rock Bet compared the IMDb ratings of each show’s final season.
While Breaking Bad leads the ranking with its latest season getting a near-perfect 9.3/10 IMDB rating, Rick and Morty ranks 7th overall, between Friends (6th with an 8.5 rating) and LOST (8th with an 8.3 rating).
Other popular shows released this year include Stranger Things season 5 (11th with a 7.8 rating) and The Boys’ final season (14th with a 7.4 rating).
