“Middle Class Matt”: Viral Animation Hits Childcare Crisis
The “last middle-class man in America” is back, and he’s facing a new kind of monster. Following the explosive success of its debut, the animation-driven nonprofit Now What!? has released the second installment of its viral hit series, “Middle Class Matt.”
After tackling the housing crisis and “hedgelords” in Episode 1—a debut that racked up over 18 million views—Episode 2 turns its satirical lens toward the skyrocketing cost of childcare in the United States.
The Math That Doesn’t Work
In the latest short, titled “Matt vs. Childcare,” Matt and his wife, Pat, are expecting another baby. While it should be a moment of celebration, the couple is quickly paralyzed by the financial reality of modern parenting.
The episode highlights a staggering statistic: many American families are now spending up to 27% of their household income on childcare alone. Through its signature blend of “economic anxiety comedy,” the short asks a pointed question: If childcare is an essential prerequisite for working, why is the math so impossible for the average family?
Cast and Creative Team
The series continues to benefit from a powerhouse of comedic talent:
-
Adam Lustick: The creator and writer (Adam Ruins Everything, Battle of the Sexes) returns as the voice of Matt, the well-meaning but perpetually bewildered protagonist.
-
James Adomian: The acclaimed impressionist (Kite Man: Hell Yeah!) lends his voice to the episode’s supporting cast.
-
Tom Scharpling: The legendary radio host and Steven Universe alum makes a “scene-stealing” appearance as Matt’s dog.
-
Production: The series is animated by Lowbrow Studios and directed by Chris Bailey (The Great Wolf Pack), featuring character designs by Christina Wu and backgrounds by Jason Smith.
Comedy as a Catalyst for Change
For creator Adam Lustick, the appeal of Matt lies in his relatability. “Middle Class Matt works because he’s not a pundit,” Lustick noted. “He’s just a dude trying to live his life. His struggles reflect what millions of Americans are feeling.”
Now What!? operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to “demystify democracy” through short-form animation. By using humor to break down complex issues like wage inequality and systemic affordability, they aim to make civic engagement accessible to a digital-first audience.
What’s Next for Matt?
Fans won’t have to wait long for more. Episode 3 is already in production and is scheduled for release in April 2026. The upcoming story will reportedly explore wage inequality, specifically focusing on the moment Matt receives a modest raise, only to realize his boss’s bonus has grown exponentially larger.

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
