Isamu Imakake’s Metaphysical Fantasy ‘Dragon Heart’ Set for U.S. Digital Debut
Fans of high-concept anime and spiritual storytelling have a new date to mark on their calendars. Freestyle Digital Media has officially acquired the U.S. distribution rights for Dragon Heart: Adventures Beyond This World, the latest feature from veteran director Isamu Imakake. Following a successful 250-screen theatrical run in Japan last year, the film is slated to make its digital debut on U.S. platforms on March 3, 2026.
A Journey Beyond the Veil
Dragon Heart follows the story of Ryusuke, a Tokyo junior high student who travels to Tokushima for his summer vacation. After a tragic accident at the Anabuki River, Ryusuke and his cousin Tomomi find themselves in a mysterious spirit realm. Rescued by a magnificent dragon and guided by an enigmatic old man, the two are told they have a chance to return to the world of the living—but only if they can discover their “true mission” in life.
Their odyssey takes them through various layers of the afterlife, ranging from nightmarish “modern hells” shaped by greed and violence to the serene, light-filled domains of Shambhala.
The Vision of a Veteran
The film is directed by Isamu Imakake, a name well-known to animation enthusiasts for his work as a key animator on the legendary Neon Genesis Evangelion and storyboard artist for Captain Tsubasa. Imakake has described the project as a deeply personal exploration of existential questions.
“This movie portrays how there are as many Hells as there are evil minds, but there are as many worlds of Heaven as there are good minds,” Imakake told Cartoon Brew. He noted that the production was a “metaphysical road movie” designed to transform youthful anxieties into hope.
Production and Spiritual Roots
Produced by the late Ryuho Okawa and animated by HS Pictures Studio, Dragon Heart blends traditional hand-drawn aesthetics with 3D CGI work overseen by VFX supervisor Yumiko Awaya. The production team reportedly utilized meditation during development to help visualize the film’s complex heavenly realms, such as Mount Meru.
The film’s unique approach to storytelling—mixing Buddhist and Hindu iconography with a contemporary coming-of-age drama—has already garnered significant attention. It is currently among the films being considered for Best Animated Feature at the 2026 Academy Awards.
English Dub and Release Details
U.S. audiences will be able to experience the film with a high-profile English dub featuring:
-
Zach Aguilar (Demon Slayer) as Ryusuke
-
Ren Holly Liu as Tomomi
-

With its blend of high-stakes adventure and philosophical depth, Dragon Heart: Adventures Beyond This World promises to be a standout release for those looking for animation that challenges the mind as much as it dazzles the eyes.
How to Watch: Dragon Heart: Adventures Beyond This World will be available on major VOD and digital platforms starting March 3, 2026.

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
