“Schoolhouse Rock” for the 2026 Midterms: Now What!? Debuts “Oligarchy Does Not Rock”
As the political landscape shifts toward the 2026 midterms, a new animated musical is aiming to make sense of the chaos—one catchy hook at a time. Now What!?, the nonprofit animation studio dedicated to civic literacy, has officially launched its 2026 slate with the release of “Oligarchy Does Not Rock.”
The short, which debuted on January 20, 2026, serves as a fast-paced, surreal explainer that draws heavy inspiration from the classic Schoolhouse Rock style, updated for a modern, social-media-savvy audience.
Breaking Down the “Big O”
“Oligarchy Does Not Rock” tackles a term that is frequently thrown around in political discourse but often misunderstood. The short uses satire and relatable characters to explain how concentrated wealth and power can undermine democratic systems.
Created by Lexie Kahanovitz and co-written by Rachel Wenitsky, the short features a pulse-pounding score by Chris Ryan and animation directed by Mark Janks. The voice cast brings high-caliber comedy talent to the table, featuring James Adomian and Matt Danner.
“When Brendan [Burch] suggested a video explaining what an oligarchy is, I had to Google it—and I’m lucky enough to have an advanced degree,” Kahanovitz said of the project. “We all know the system isn’t working for us… but when the problem is explained in language few of us understand, how are we supposed to fix anything?”
The Mission Behind the Music
Now What!? was founded in 2023 by Brendan Burch, the CEO of the Emmy-winning animation studio Six Point Harness (Hair Love, The Boys). The 501(c)(3) nonprofit was created with a specific goal: to use the power of world-class animation to demystify democracy and policy for Gen Z voters.
By focusing on “creators-first” media, the organization has partnered with top-tier talent from across the industry—including writers and artists from The Daily Show, Corporate, and Family Guy—to produce content that is nonpartisan, educational, and, most importantly, funny.
A Momentum-Building Slate
“Oligarchy Does Not Rock” follows the viral success of the studio’s previous short, “Middle Class Matt” (created by Adam Lustick), which garnered over 18 million views across social platforms. That momentum has allowed Now What!? to commit to a monthly release schedule throughout 2026, leading directly into the midterm elections.
Future episodes of Middle Class Matt are already in production, alongside new shorts designed to tackle everything from housing costs to the inner workings of local government.
Where to Watch
In an era of rising civic apathy and complex political jargon, Now What!? is betting that a three-minute musical number might be the most effective way to get young people engaged with the ballot box.

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
