Netflix and MAPPA Announce Groundbreaking Partnership to Redefine the Anime Industry

In a move set to reshape the global animation landscape, Netflix and the acclaimed Japanese studio MAPPA have officially announced an expanded strategic partnership. The deal, unveiled on January 21, 2026, aims to establish a “world-class animation studio model” that integrates everything from concept development to global merchandising.

This alliance marks a significant evolution from the traditional production committee system, granting MAPPA—the powerhouse behind hits like Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen—unprecedented creative and financial independence.

A New Model for Global Storytelling

The core of the partnership is a co-development agreement where Netflix and MAPPA will collaborate on original anime projects from the earliest concept phases. Unlike standard licensing deals, this arrangement allows MAPPA to lead every stage of production, including story development, global demand analysis, and merchandising.

Manabu Otsuka, President and CEO of MAPPA, emphasized the importance of this autonomy:

“Japanese animation studios must proactively lead every stage, from understanding global audience needs to reaching viewers and expanding related businesses. This expanded partnership is based on MAPPA’s core belief in being an independent studio—both creatively and in business.”

For Netflix, the partnership is a response to explosive growth. Internal metrics reveal that anime viewership on the platform has tripled over the last five years, with more than half of Netflix’s global subscribers now actively watching the genre.

What Fans Can Expect

Under this new agreement, a slate of original MAPPA-produced titles will premiere exclusively and simultaneously in over 190 countries.

While the companies confirmed multiple projects are currently in planning, several major titles are already on the horizon:

  • Dorohedoro Season 2: Fans have long awaited the return of this gritty, surreal cult favorite. Under the new partnership, the second season is slated to debut in April 2026.

  • Original IPs: The deal focuses heavily on new, original stories developed with a “global perspective,” designed to push the boundaries of visual expression.

  • Expanded Merchandising: For the first time, fans can expect a more integrated rollout of official apparel and collectibles alongside the release of their favorite shows.

A Win-Win for Creators and Viewers

Kaata Sakamoto, Vice President of Content for Netflix Japan, praised MAPPA’s “courage to take risks,” noting that combining the studio’s unique creative approach with Netflix’s massive global reach will pioneer “new frontiers in anime expression.”

This deal also addresses long-standing industry concerns regarding studio stability. By securing a long-term, stable pipeline of funding and global distribution, MAPPA aims to invest more heavily in top-tier talent and technology, potentially setting a new standard for working conditions and production quality in the anime industry.

As the “Netflix Jail” era of delayed releases fades into the past, this simultaneous global model ensures that whether you are in Tokyo, New York, or London, you’ll be watching the next MAPPA masterpiece at the exact same moment.
