English Dub Review: Cat’s Eye “Stay Out of The Diary!/Dad’s Self-Portrait”
The Cat’s Eye is back in business after their holiday break, and I’m not just talking about their cafe. This time, we get not one but two episodes to fill our thieving needs after an unexpected delay of its seventh episode last week. Please don’t ask me why it got delayed because I don’t even know. Of course, as far as these episodes indicate, retrieving their father’s artifacts is not the only thing the sisters are dealing with. They’re also facing challenges regarding their dynamic with Toshio, particularly the relationship between him and Hitomi.
The seventh episode, “Stay Out of The Diary!”, has the sisters getting an unexpected roommate when Toshio’s apartment floods. Given Toshio’s gullibility, this dilemma puts Cat’s Eye in a difficult position as they try to hide their secret from the detective during his stay. However, that leads him to find Hitomi’s diary, allowing him to slowly put the pieces together. Why is it so hard for people not to read someone’s personal diaries? Fortunately, they received some help from “The Mouse” in maintaining their secret identities. The eighth episode, “Dad’s Self-Portrait”, then has Cat’s Eye striving to keep this complicated status quo by preventing Toshio from getting demoted through a fake heist notice involving the Tear Girl painting. Additionally, this is the episode where the season’s plot really kicks in, as their pursuit of the “Dad’s Self-Portrait” painting leads them to confront their father’s old acquaintance and uncover a mysterious syndicate.
These two episodes undoubtedly warrant the long-awaited return of the latest iteration of “Cat’s Eye”. “Stay Out of The Diary!” further highlights the awkwardly humorous chemistry between Toshio and the Cat’s Eye sisters, which is enough to excuse its familiar narrative elements. However, “Dad’s Self-Portrait” was the episode that really invigorated interest in the season’s plot, as the sisters will be dealing with a much bigger threat that’s connected to their father. Rather than repeating the same structure involving stealing the artifacts, the 2025 version continues to use the formula to develop its characters and even sets the stakes for the sisters’ identities. With the sisters now knowing about the Syndicate, we can expect the last few heists to be much bigger than they would realize.
