Comic Review: Rick and Morty – The End #2

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Morty is picked up by the new Vindicators, assembled by Parmesean to find Rick, who has sequestered himself in a world of his own making.

OUR TAKE

We begin the final year that Oni Press will be making Rick and Morty comics with the second issue of the final miniseries. Picking up where the first issue left off, Morty’s brief shoot out with the Ball Fondlers led to him losing an arm and almost dying, but luckily he was saved by the new Vindicators, consisting of Planetina, Sleepy Gary (who is now a real dream being of kind), Titanium D (an alphabetrian), and an old Meeseeks tasked with murdering Rick. If you remember the Vindicators from their original third season appearance (or their comic spin-offs and ten episode webseries prequel? The hell?), you’ll remember they were a dig at the Avengers and superhero team up movies that were a lot more prominent in pop culture back in 2017 than they are now, nearly a decade later. They also pretty much all died in the episode they were introduced, aside from Supernova, the lone female member who was also the leader, had planet based abilities, and voiced by Gillian Jacobs, an actor from Dan Harmon’s other notable show, Community. So, for this new iteration, they are led by Planetina, the lone female member who was also the leader, had planet based abilities, and voiced by Allison Brie, an actor from Dan Harmon’s other notable show, Community.

Honestly, not a bad call back with some reasonably interesting pulls to other stand out Rick and Morty episodes, which makes sense for a series that is meant to be the big culmination of at least the comics. Though it is a bit of a shame there aren’t any comic exclusive characters who could make a comeback to commemorate its long run, but I guess Oni Press was aware that most people only watch the show. As for Rick, it turns out he actually swiped some notebook paper from one of the non-canonical Ricks he met in “Vs. The Universe”, which has somehow allowed him to create a world where it’s only him, Beth, Summer, and a black man named Gerry (which Sleepy Gary understandably takes issue with). Once Morty and his new team find him, it’s not long before a shoot out happens, leading to all the dream family dying and the new Vindicators left to burn, though who knows if that’s the last we’ll see of them. Whatever the case, Rick and Morty are reunited and Rick has a plan, which it looks like we’ll find out about in the four remaining issues, plus a super secret spoilery single issue released after The End…ends.
