Mark enrolls in a dangerous science experiment to win a Super Bowl ticket

Our Take

The aforementioned science experiment clones Mark with that of a mutated Mark that is actually a pretty good guy. In fact, he’s so good that at first I was going to write this week’s episode of Universal Basic Guys as a bit of a rip off Family Guy’s “Quagmire’s Baby” where Mark was simply making a clone of himself to do a bunch of things with the family that he didn’t want to do.

Instead, we get this sweet-hearted romp that this show had no business in doing. Yes, there are some hilarious moments this week that include mutant Mark’s letter and a bunch of other scenes that had great set up gags. But really “Two Marks” might be the best episode of the season more due to some of the DNA that is clearly in here inspired by the likes of Peter Bogdanovich-directed Mask or Shrek where the viewers are meant to engage themselves in a character that has more layers than what is initially presented and thus you start rooting for the mutated Mark even more so than one would for the regular Mark who is a bit more preoccupied with getting to the big game.

The result is another side of the Universal Basic Guys staff that maybe we haven’t seen a lot of so far but maybe we should do in the future. Don’t get me wrong, I love the silly stuff just as much as the next guy, but if this show starts to show off some different stripes, more people are going to notice, and make this series that much more successful for FOX.
