Review: Adventure Time – Fionna and Cake “The Insect That Sang”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Fionna and Huntress Wizard are taken to multiversal court for their hand in killing the Cosmic Owl, leaving Cake to round up guests for the venue on her own.

OUR TAKE

Hoo boy, things are ramping up as we get closer to the season (and possibly series if we don’t see a renewal) finale. For one, the Boy’s Night venue is able to still happen on short notice, and navigates a lot of sudden mishaps, like DJ Flame being burnt out from playing for the Lemoncarbs, leading to a big show of talent from, Hunter and Fennel, Ellis P, that kid with alopecia that Flame was mentoring, and finally Marshall Lee, who gains the will to perform after he learns that Hana is no longer involved, and in order to show Simone the music that she helped inspire within him. I do wish that they kept Donald Glover for this so we could hear more of his musical talents, but Kris Kollins is doing an upstanding job filling in. The downside of all of this is that this happens without Fionna. Or at least this is a downside for her, as even though everything worked out and they handily get the money needed to pay Queenie for the Sweet Spot, Fionna is…emotionally devastated that they did it without her? I mean, okay, I can kinda get that when you feel aimless in life and have to live up to saving the world last season, finding out people can handle big things you set up without you can be a little discouraging, but THEN in her despair, she takes a bulldozer and destroys the Sweet Spot. Good luck explaining all of that, I guess.

But that’s not the only major thing that happens, as the reason Fionna is not there for the venue is that she and Huntress Wizard are taken to stand trial for the murder of Cosmic Owl, which Scarab apparently spotted, or at least them disposing of the body. Through some Night Court inspired legal tomfoolery, Fionna does manage to get the scent off them…by blaming Finn for doing it in the dream. And hey, that’s really doing Finn dirty, and just adds to Fionna’s really odd behavior that’s turning on people around her, but I’m oddly intrigued where this is headed, and if it might be the thing needed to save Finn from death. The jury seem to believe this tale, as Finn’s body is transported at the end of the episode as PB, Marceline, and Simon finally find the Heart of the Forest…on the verge of death. The Heart, incidentally, gets the origin story flashback cold open this week, which I sure hope is going to lead to meaning something by the end! A statement that could apply to a lot of those cold opens. And lastly, Huntress finds the source of the Heart in Fionna’s world, apparently being in a bunch of plants instead of just one big beast. Two episodes left, let’s see if this all pays off by the end!
