Comic Review: Adventure Time #7

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

As Finn and Jake’s minds sink into the depths of their respective methods of madness, Computer Princess, Princess Bubblegum, and Marceline try to figure out what the hell is going on.

OUR TAKE

We’re at the third part of this current four part story arc, and we can see on each page how far Finn and Jake have come over the past…six issues. Yeah, do you get what I mean when I say it feels like we’re escalating a bit fast? But even then Finn and Jake are not in much of this issue, only enough to show how Finn is mentally falling into The Lich, while Jake is merging with Golb and the robot Ice King’s crown. And apparently Golb is so powerful that he drained the color out of the rest of Ooo (which didn’t happen in the Adventure Time TV finale but hey, new continuity, it’s fine), while The Lich in Finn’s body travels with it to another dimension to ask it to destroy all life. You know, typical Lich stuff. And then there’s Bubblegum, Marceline, Robot Billy, and Computer Princess (who they should REALLY not be abbreviating if they know what’s good for them) just on the sidelines and being our color (or rather colorless) commentary as they are in the dark about what’s happening. Their part of the story is not exactly the most interesting, but it’s at least good to have a perspective of what’s happening on the ground.

Usually I get these in PDFs but this time I had to go pick up a physical copy (oh woe is me, having to support local comic shops), and the page placement and layout is pretty interesting. The top half of the page mostly follows what’s happening in the Computer Kingdom, while the bottom is of the surreal doom that is occurring because of Golb and The Lich. But what’s neat is that the opposite side of the page shows what’s happening to Golb and The Lich (and Jake and Finn, respectively) at the same time, creating exact parallels for whenever the two buds are reflecting on their poor life choices while the two dark entities are further destroying space and time. I’ve seen some similar stuff with the recent Absolute Martian Manhunter from DC, so it’s nice to see that there are people who are making incentives for people to pick up single issues for things that they would only get that way. Anyway, the arc wraps up next issue and then…apparently a Robot Finn arc that starts in January? Gonna seem like a real downgrade after what comes next time.
