Netflix Secures Exclusive Global Rights to Board Game ‘Catan,’ Plans Extensive Film and TV Universe

Netflix has acquired the exclusive global rights to adapt the world-famous strategy board game, Catan, and is developing a large-scale slate of projects based on the popular franchise.

The deal with publisher Asmodee Entertainment and Catan GmbH is wide-ranging, covering both scripted and unscripted content, including animated projects like TV series.

Catan, originally released in 1995 as The Settlers of Catan by Klaus Teuber, has become a cultural phenomenon, selling over 45 million copies worldwide and translated into more than 40 languages. It is widely considered a “gateway” game that introduced millions to modern board gaming through its compelling blend of strategy, resource negotiation (wood, brick, wheat, sheep, ore), and world-building.

Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of Scripted Series for the U.S. and Canada, highlighted the inherent drama of the game, stating, “Anyone who has played Catan knows that the intense strategy and negotiation at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama.”

The forthcoming adaptations will be produced by Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, along with Darren Kyman of Asmodee and Pete Fenlon of Catan Studio. Crucially, the sons of the late game creator Klaus Teuber, Benjamin and Guido Teuber, will also serve as producers on all projects, ensuring fidelity to their father’s vision.

The Teuber brothers noted that their father “imagined an aspirational world where people would gather by trading, building and settling together—both at the table and beyond it,” and this collaboration with Netflix marks an exciting new chapter to inspire storytelling on a global stage.

The Catan franchise now joins Netflix’s growing collection of game-based adaptations, which includes hits like Arcane, Castlevania, and upcoming projects based on popular titles such as Assassin’s Creed and Monopoly.
