English Dub Review: Cat’s Eye “Night Flight Is a Dangerous Scent”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Hitomi is concerned about their next heist, as Detective Asatani’s suspicious gaze follows her.

Our Take:
As we discovered in the previous two episodes, the heists performed by Cat’s Eye weren’t without their share of challenges that risked exposing them to the public.  This week’s episode showcased that their latest heist is no exception, though it’s not their intended robbery that they should be worried about.  While preparing to steal the Rhine River painting from the art museum, the Cat’s Eye sisters come face-to-face with a new detective in the department, Mitsuko Asatani.  However, this particular detective from headquarters appears to be more formidable than Toshio due to her superior investigation skills and intellect.  Asatani’s expertise led her to assume that the sisters and the Cat’s Eye thieves are the same through Hitomi’s perfume, prompting the sisters to come up with the ultimate strategy to outsmart her.
Rather than having the primary focus be on its heist, the episode highlights the sisters’ strategic approaches outside of their robberies.  This is evident through Asatani’s interrogation with the sisters at the cafe, where Hitomi and Ai utilized motion capture technology to fool the detective while Rui tackles the heist solo.  There’s no doubt that the heists were entertaining to watch despite the show’s perceived narrative repetition.  However, “Night Flight Is a Dangerous Scent” showcased that an interrogation can be just as intense as stealing a painting from people’s noses, with Asatani’s appearance and Yoshifumi Seuda’s direction adding to the suspense of the sisters’ attempt to maintain their cover.  Regarding Asatani’s suspicion towards Hitomi’s identity, we can already assume that we shouldn’t count her out of the picture just yet, as she’s eager to uncover the truth behind the sisters.
