“There are some things we can never let go of…”

Our Take
This time around, we get an episode that creatively bridges the past and present by using a high school stage play as a narrative device, blending historical memory with modern reflection. Through this structure, we learn about a mysterious figure known only as the Harlot, her hardships, and a surprising romance that connects her with a samurai. Meanwhile, characters in the modern day, including Jinya, react to the dramatization of their shared past, offering humorous and poignant commentary from both within and outside the story.
As the story flips between timelines, deeper themes emerge such as family bonds, unresolved grief, and how memory can both preserve and distort truth. Characters grapple with visions that may or may not be supernatural, and allow their audience to piece together how past relationships and actions ripple through generations. The anime cleverly leaves some questions unanswered while introducing new elements of intrigue, like possible descendants and modern-day consequences of ancient events.
Overall, the episode continues the series’ unique approach to storytelling as it seamlessly blends eras, perspectives, and genres. Whether you’re invested in the emotional arcs of historical characters or intrigued by the ongoing mystery in the present, this installment rewards attention and curiosity. While some viewers may find the pacing uneven or wish for more grounded romantic development, the ambition and layered direction make it a compelling and unconventional experience.
