English Dub Review: Kaiju No. 8 “Hoshina’s Day Off”

Overview:

A day off… After training for so long, Reno has forgotten what he’s supposed to do with free time.

Our Take:

I always wonder what makes a studio do an episode like this. It’s not a bad thing necessarily, but it’s essentially just a filler episode about nothing. It’s a way to ease us back into this show before things start getting crazy. I’m not sure when this episode takes place because Hibino isn’t in the custody of the defense force, which is where we left him at the end of the season.

One thing I love about this show is that it gives me the feeling that anime is becoming mainstream media. I say that because in season one, the OP and ED were performed by Yungblud and OneRepublic, respectively. Those are some big performers here in the west, and to the best of my knowledge, this isn’t a Dragonball Z on Toonami situation where we get a different opening. OneRepublic, at least, is back for one of the songs this season as well.

I don’t think you HAVE to watch this episode to understand what happens in season two. But if you’ve been missing the characters of Kaiju No. 8 badly, then this will at least give you something until season two starts properly, I assume next week.
