English Dub Review: The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl “A Gorilla Romantic Comedy with the Girl I Fancy / A Gorilla Romantic Comedy with My Classmate / A Gorilla Romantic Comedy with My Friend That I Fancy”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Sophia runs into three people she knows while walking on her day off.

OUR TAKE

So, last episode ended with the most flacid of cliffhangers as Louis accidently fell on top of her and it seemed like maybe they would kiss. And then, at the start of this episode, he got off her and left. Keep in mind that these two are now already dating. I mean I get taking things slow, don’t get me wrong, but this is also one of the most cliche moves in these types of stories, and it only ever works if there are things at stake if the characters involved submit to their hormones and…do stuff. You could maybe there is some social hierarchy stuff that might be impacted if they go public with the relationship, hence Sophia’s somewhat understandable hesitance to do so, but kissing ONCE? I mean look, I’m not going to pretend I’m anywhere close to the intended demographic for this, but I have also DEFINITELY seen more entertaining versions of whatever is happening here within the same genre and age rating. This is just boring and dull, and the fact that these characters also have special magical animal powers JUST MAKES IT THAT MUCH WORSE. When are they gonna FUCKING USE THEIR GODDAMN POWERS. DAMMIT.

Ugh, anyway, I guess this week’s episode decided we hadn’t had enough nothing this time, so instead of progressing any of the main plots in any significant way, we’re getting three vignettes about Sophia running into people who like her to some degree. First is the lady’s man Aricent who sees her throw belligerent drunks out of a pub and offers to buy her coffee as a reward, but she refuses. After that, Isaac starts really reflecting on how much he has a crush on her and I feel nothing but second hand embarrassment for him on that. And lastly, queen bee Carissa finally makes amends and that one girl who got bullied is now in better spirts and has friends so all’s well that ends well, I guess. We are now two thirds deep into this show and it feels like just about nothing has really happened in terms of the world and the main developments have just been Sophia getting more and more people to like her and also having a boyfriend who she doesn’t want to let people know about. Can you not tell how thrilled I am for having to cover this for another month? It is just so gosh darn thrilling.
