English Dub Review: Wind Breaker “Re:Start”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Bofurin is able to defeat every member of the Natori-led KEEL and safely rescue Nagato.  What happened to Nagato?  He explains everything to Sakura, Anzai, and the others.  On the way back, Sakura expresses his true feelings, watching as Nirei regains consciousness while Tsugeura carries him.  In response, the other first-year class 1 students also begin to speak.  As he watches over this scene, Kaji reveals a mysterious and deep expression toward the KEEL group.

Our Take:

An intense battle isn’t complete without an exposition-filled aftermath to tie it all together, and Wind Breaker is no different.  Undoubtedly, the show is known for its hard-hitting violence, but on certain occasions, its heart hits harder than any punch or kick the characters throw at its viewers.  This episode is no exception, as its first act showcases Nagato’s journey to joining a ruthless team like KEEL.  After being rescued by Natori, Nagato hoped to get stronger by joining Natori’s team, not knowing the group’s heinous and violent nature.  However, his other reason was that he was inspired by Anzai, who stood his ground in protecting him from a group of thugs during their childhood.  Although Nagato felt guilty for bringing Furin into the fight, the team, including Umemiya, was again quick to forgive his actions over a pleasant after-battle dinner.

Of course, Nagato wasn’t the only person struggling with guilt, as Sakura was upset about his stubbornness.  This moment showcases Sakura’s growth in expressing his mental health and guilt to his new friends, who comfort him in his time of need.  In a way, “Re:Start” isn’t about starting over as the title suggested. It reflects forgiveness and strength originating from the heart and trusted relationships.  Much like some of the earlier episodes in season one, the episode further proves that the show’s character moments are just as strong as a person’s fists.  In case you’re wondering, I again feel touched by the show’s emotional grasp.  Unfortunately, their celebration might get cut short soon thanks to the mysterious tattooed man who posed as a KEEL member.  Could we be looking at a foe more formidable than KEEL’s ruthless leader?
