English Dub Review: Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX “Nyaan Doesn’t Know About Kira-Kira”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

When Machu is detained by Xavier, the former pilot of the GQuuuuuux, Nyann must take her place in the next Clan Battle against a pair of former Zeon aces, the two surviving members of the Black Tri Stars. Also Shuji has a cold, making things even harder.

OUR TAKE

There’s no way we’re nearly halfway done with the whole show, right? It’s way too fun to almost be all over! Surely they’re going to announce AT LEAST a second season by the end of the twelfth episode, RIGHT? Well, regardless of how much more we have to go, this episode proved to be another strong one, testing an expected question: what happens if Machu can’t reach her Gundam in time for a battle? Well, apparently Nyaan can’t step in with little to no issue and murder the opposing team easily, even when they’re basically former Zeon elite pilots. While last week’s opponents were original characters from the losing Federation, this week dips into the existing pool of pilots who could actually exist in this changed timeline, specifically two of the Black Tri Stars, who were a two-episode bad guy team in the original Mobile Suit Gundam that were pretty easily killed by Amuro but left such an impression with the audience that they would go on to be referenced in a ton of other media, including many future Gundam shows. And I hope everyone enjoyed them coming back because they’re dead once again! And if not, well…that sucks for you.

Speaking of things sucking, while the Clan Battle itself is an awesome watch once again, things have definitely taken a turn for Machu, who is now seeing that she may not be a special irreplaceable pilot for the GQuuuuuux like she thought. It was one thing to try to stomach that her partner Shuji may be an unrepentant murderer, but at least she knew that ONLY SHE could partner with him because of their shared Newtype connection that no one else she knew seemed to have. Well, surprise surprise, Nyaan can also access these powers as well, and is ALSO just as willing to murder in battle! The things you gotta do to impress a guy these days, am I right? Though I should point out that while there’s been plenty of evidence that Machu is into Shuji more than on a pilot level, there’s also considerable signs she may like Nyaan just as much, which probably means seeing the two of them slaughter people on live TV together and without her feels even worse! There’s obviously only one solution to settle all of this emotional turmoil…helping to assassinate Kycillia, one of the main antagonists of the original show! God, get your mind out of the gutter, people.
