Snoop Dogg Releases “LAST DANCE WITH MARY JANE” Animated Music Video

Snoop Dogg has teamed up with Psyop to release an animated music video from “Last Dance with Mary Jane”.
“Last Dance with Mary Jane” is Snoop Dogg’s cover of the 1993 song “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. It was released on Snoop’s album Missionary last December through Death Row Records, Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. Produced by Dr. Dre, the track incorporates Petty’s vocals and harmonica by permission of his family and with Petty’s own enthusiastic endorsement to sample the song before his passing in 2017.
The semi-autobiographical story, centered on Snoop Dogg’s lifelong relationship with cannabis, is an exploration of personal choice, social injustice, racial disparities, as well as the struggles of growing up in America’s inner cities. The story follows Snoop as he flies into a surreal world and experiences growing up again, recapturing his different looks throughout his life and career, before ending the video back in the doctor’s office with a blunt decision.
Production began with an exploratory phase to define the exact look and feel, before a live-action, green-screen shoot with Snoop, Dre and Jelly Roll took place in December. From the start, the production team knew they didn’t want a music video that relied solely on any single technique. With this goal in mind, they worked to blend live action, AI, and a wide range of handcrafted animation styles – 2D, 3D, collage and motion design.
Proprietary AI software developed by Temple Caché, along with other AI programs, were used to ideate characters and shape dreamlike landscapes, yet none of the scenes were totally AI-generated.
