English Dub Season Review: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Season Five

Overview:

The Freya familia is the focus of this fifth season. What designs does Freya have for Bell and how is Syr connected?

Our Take:

I said “no delay” but unfortunately this show suffered a lot of delays. Dubs already have delays and when the sub gets delayed it can create a lot of issues. The premiere date for season five was back in October and the last episode of the dub aired last week. Even when we returned from the delay it seemed like there was one more week that got delayed. I just hope that this isn’t a sign of things to come and we will still get more seasons.

The first half of the season was amazing to me. There was a mystery of sorts to uncover and even though Ais was very involved there was still some romantic undertones. After that is when it started to fall off in my eyes.

Once again Ais was barely in the story, and since she was the whole triggering event for this story it’s gotten annoying. I haven’t done a big re-watch recently but it feels like she hasn’t been a part of the story since season two. She has some moments here or there but for a character that is supposed to be the main heroine it’s getting annoying she’s barely in it.

From an animation standpoint it continues to deliver, especially in the fight scenes. Since we got another war game in the latter half it stands to reason there would be some decent action scenes. It was difficult to feel the stakes because last season it seemed like death was right around the corner for Bell and Ryuu.

Speaking of Ryuu, we can officially add her to the Bell harem now. She confessed her feelings to him this season and with Syr’s and Freya’s confession that brings this season’s confession count to three. But since Syr is essentially Freya does that make it only two? Did I mention the mysteries don’t get solved? I can’t tell if Freya is gone now or what. This was one of the weaker seasons of the show but I still hope to see more. I have a feeling this series is headed for a harem end unfortunately.
