English Dub Review: To Be Hero X “The Commoner”

Nice (Lin Ling) faces off with God Eye to save Moon.

Our Take(Spoilers):

As I understand it, To Be Hero X is something of an anthology series. We’re going to spend time with a bunch of heroes before we get to the end. This episode was so damn good that I’m going to miss “Nice”. In fact, that and the spoiler I’m going to delve into are the only things that make me want to knock a half a point or so off of this episode but it was too damn good. My jaw is still on the floor with how this one ended. The animation is still top notch and I’m loving how it transitions so seamlessly from the CGI animation to more traditional 2D.

I’m going to get into the spoilers now because I can’t even begin to tell you how awesome this episode was without talking about them. Nice’s fans didn’t want him to go save Moon and because of how fans perceptions work he wasn’t able to move. But Lin Ling remembered what made him want to be a hero and eventually was able to move through sheer force of will. Now all of the fans know that Nice is dead and Lin Ling has been pretending to be him but they could tell his love for Moon was real.

Lin Ling eventually comes out on top as people being to believe in him and learns that Moon is actually safe and God Eye was using a fake. Now that the world knows he’s not Nice, he takes on the hero name The Commoner, which is perfect for him. He even returns to the island Moon is on to bring her home, she’s sick of her vacation by now.

Perfect ending right? Except the cliffhanger from episode one comes back full force. Someone shoots Moon in the head right in front of Lin Ling. They look like a villainous version of Iron Man but other than that we have no clue. I HATED this ending but it was so shocking I LOVED it, I know I’m confused too. Not since I was watching Attack on Titan as it was coming out have I been this shocked at an episode’s ending.
