English Dub Review: Insomniacs After School “The Keel -Canopus-; Shooting Star”

Ganta and Isaki’s class go on a trip, and later they try recruiting their friends for a festival.

OUR TAKE

Looks like HiDive is finally catching up with their Insomniac releases as we get a double whammy of episodes, showing how the Astronomy Club is growing in capability AND how the romance between our young couple is continuing to blossom. Or I guess a more fitting metaphor would be that it is…compressing from high gravity into a star? It’s a supernova of love! But not a Champagne Supernova because they’re not old enough to listen to Oasis. What was I saying? Anyway, this week shows us just how far Ganta and Isaki have come in learning to trust each other, as well as how much they’ve come to rely on each other for a good night (or day) sleep. Though obviously just saying that is going to sound super weird so they’re both shy about being upfront about it, but eventually they manage to blurt things out and have a nice time at the beach, where Ganta gets a photo of her. Sounds like a really wholesome moment that can only lead to good things later, right? God, I feel so alone, and it might also have to do with this being a colder month. What was I saying again?

Anyway, the second episode we’re looking at brings us to basically the halfway point and gives a lot of the supporting character students a chance to show off their character quirks. One’s a painter who uses the two as models, one’s a baseball player who uses Ganta as a catcher, and one’s a total bitch who just wants attention. But while it’s nice the show is slowly getting a robust cast of characters and not just relying on the main eventual couple, it’s worth pointing out that Isaki says to Ganta “leave a trace of me behind” in regards to the photo he took of her on the trip. Now, I’m not usually one to speculate, but I am someone who gets paid by the word and needs to get to a minimum of four hundred, so here we go. Could she be dying or becoming ill from hard to cure illness? Has her insomnia been such a struggle throughout her life that she may be thinking of unaliving herself? Is this just a weird hook to keep us guessing as we keep watching for the next month and a half? It could be anything really, but I guess we’ll have to see what exactly is in the next few episodes!
