English Dub Review: Blue Lock “The Subs Take To The Stage”

Overview:

Shidou joins the match in the second half and throws everyone off with his crazy play. After he scores a free kick, Chigiri and Niko get swapped out with Reo and Hiori. With Blue Lock’s new formation, Reo proves his worth with Chameleon Defense.

Our Take:

This season of Blue Lock would be an all-time great sports anime if it wasn’t for the animation holding it back. I think if it was an anime about anything else it might not have been as big a deal but with soccer having so much movement it becomes apparent pretty quick. Some of the CGI is bad but when we get the up close hand animated shots they look so good. It’s a frustrating thing to witness for sure, I understand the budget demands things like that but it still boggles the mind.

I think Reo is going to have a lot to say about how the outcome of this game is going to go. I’m excited to see him and Nagi on the field together again. But more than that I love when sports anime treat player’s abilities like a “power” and Reo’s talent being called Chameleon Defense gets me hyped. Let’s just hope the animation doesn’t mess it up.
