English Dub Review: Blue Lock “Chameleon”

Overview:

Isagi looks back and analyzes what he did when he scored a goal on reflex. Then, when the second match begins, Reo finds his new playstyle: Chameleon.

Our Take:

I might have a new favorite character after this episode. Kenyu Yukimiya is your typical glasses-wearing anime character and he’s paired up with Nagi. Yukimiya wears these cool orange sunglasses when playing and I thought he would just look cool but he plays cool as well. I haven’t seen too many people attempt the Beckham shot in this anime but he did and almost made it too. The only downside to focusing on these characters is that it makes me feel a little bad that I would rather one of these guys be the main character over Isagi.

One thing I am starting to notice is the quality of animation is going down. I saw some discourse about this online but hadn’t seen anything too bad other than the occasional bad CGI shot. This episode might have been where the complaints started since the dub is a bit behind. There were a few shots that felt very static and just poorly animated. I don’t like bringing attention to this often because I know how hard these people work and the conditions are usually awful. Nobody wants to put out a poor product but time-crunches are a serious thing.
