English Dub Review: You are Ms. Servant. “My Fateful Encounter with You.”

Overview

Based on the Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Shotan. The story begins with a maid suddenly appearing at the house of high school student Hitoyoshi Yokoya, asking to be hired. However, her background as a former assassin makes Hitoyoshi think twice. From this fateful encounter, their lives together will forever be changed…

Our Take

For the first episode, a mysterious maid suddenly shows up at Hitoyoshi Yokoya’s home, offering her services. Though she has an unusual background, her efforts to settle into her role as a housekeeper. While Yokoya is initially hesitant, an unexpected event leads him to accept her, despite her lacking experience in typical maid duties. The maid’s quirks and Yokoya’s attempts to help her adjust make for some entertaining moments. And because Japan has on 2nd Amendment, It makes sense for her not to have a gun and instead she comes equipped with throwing Knives like she’s Yor from Spy X Family along with Spider-Man-like reflexes and agility.

As they navigate this new arrangement, the maid’s stoic personality begins to soften, and she starts to experience simple joys in her new environment, while Yokoya, dealing with his struggles, finds comfort in the maid’s growing presence in his life. To the point that their relationship evolves in a way that shows both characters gradually opening up to each other, even if they’re still getting to know one another…

Overall, this episode sets the stage for an intriguing series with a mix of humor and warmth. The animation is solid, and the characters’ interactions are fun to watch. While the premise feels familiar and could work as a live-action low-budget action movie, the unique twist and the emotional undertones give the story the potential for deeper development. And given that both leads have some dark aspect of their past that’s yet to be revealed, I’m curious to learn about them both as the plot progresses.
