English Dub Review: The Elusive Samurai “Children in Winter”

Overview

Toki/Tokiyuki reigns in the new year for the first time in Suwa. As the chaos from the downfall lulls throughout the country, skirmishes still break out here and there, and another crisis knocks on Suwa’s doors.

Our Take

The elusive warriors face growing tension as they embark on a mission to scout the northern border of Suwa. With winter in full swing and enemies lurking around every corner, Tokiyuki, along with Ayako, Kojirou, Genba, and Shizuku, set off to uncover enemy plans. Despite Yorishige losing his ability to foresee the future, his concern for Tokiyuki provides lighthearted moments amidst the tension. Along the way, they encounter Fubuki, a skilled dual-wielding swordsman, who has been protecting a small village of children orphaned by the war.

Fubuki, despite his gluttonous appetite, proves to be a valuable ally with his sharp combat skills and dedication to teaching the children self-defense. His potential as a mentor to Tokiyuki becomes evident, offering a unique opportunity for the young leader to grow. Meanwhile, Sadamune’s meeting with the menacing Shokan foreshadows the imminent threats against Suwa, raising the stakes for the warriors and the villagers alike.

Overall, the episode balances intense action and emotional moments, providing engaging character development and world-building. The introduction of Fubuki brings hope to the group, but with formidable enemies on the horizon, the battles ahead promise to be challenging. Tokiyuki’s resolve to protect the village hints at greater developments in his leadership and the group’s journey the real question is, what direction this will lead to in future storylines?
